The kings are back to their den, and despite protests, the match went well as planned. The two years wait was finally over for the crowd to witness their team at Chepauk.
The Chennai crowd, as usual, turned the Stadium yellow. Huge roars whenever their team performed well and even applauded the opponents’ efforts.
Dhoni surprisingly opted to bowl first at Chepauk where 7/10 times the team that batted first won. Karthik was happy with the decision as he wanted to bat as well. Sam Billings replaced Mark Wood while Thakur came in for injured Jadhav. For KKR, Curran replaced Johnson.
Narine and Lynn smashed young Chahar’s over for 18 runs. Harbhajan Singh brought CSK back into the game by removing Narine for 12. Uthappa and Lynn made maximum use of the powerplay, but Jadeja uprooted Lynn’s leg stump, got him out for 22.
It was one of Dhoni’s gem of a plan to make Watson bowl the 9th over, and he ended up picking Rana’s wicket.
The local boy and opponent team’s captain Karthik replaced Rana. Next ball, Uthappa had to walk out because of Raina’s brilliance in the field, a great pick up, and a direct hit to remove Uthappa for 29.
Russell took his time to settle but once he got in, he middled every single delivery, and You know the result.
He smashed literally every ball out of the ground which includes an ‘out of the stadium’ six. Karthik, on the other hand, played the anchor role well.
This was the first instance where Dinesh Karthik got out since 24th February. He got out for 26.
Russell’s magnificent knock of unbeaten 36 balls 88, with 11 sixes and a four guided KKR to the first 200 total of this year’s IPL. The visitors ended with 202/6.
Chennai Super Kings has chased down 200+ total with ease already at this very venue. They came out with the mindset to attack from ball one, Watson and Rayudu did the much-needed damage at the top. CSK added crucial 75 runs just under six overs. Curran gave the first breakthrough, Watson mistimed a pull shot to Rinku Singh on 42. After the power play overs, Rayudu couldn’t get many out of the park. Kuldeep got his wicket, a soft dismissal to Mavi on 39. Raina, unfortunately, picked up a leg injury. He had no choice but to go for the big shot. He couldn’t get it through and had to go for 14.
Sam Billings and Dhoni started to build an important partnership, the one similar to Russell-Karthik’s stand. Dhoni tried to give Billings strike as much as possible.
As Kris Srikanth said, Billings has wonderful eye-hand coordination. His master class knock of 56 from just 23 deliveries set the tone for the chase. In the last over, 17 runs were needed with the star from the other night Bravo and Jadeja on the crease. Vinay Kumar, possibly a debatable choice for the final over felt the pressure. A no-ball, a wide in the final over made it easy for CSK to chase down 203.
