Batsman Umar Akmal has failed the fitness test in England ahead of the Champions Trophy and has been asked to return to Pakistan.

“He has failed two fitness tests during the ongoing camp there in England ahead of Champions Trophy,” PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan told ESPNcricinfo. “So since we have a policy not to carry unfit players, it has been decided to call him back and send a replacement. We have a deadline until May 25 so we are deliberating on the possible replacements.”

Pakistan are considering either Umar Amin or Haris Sohail as Akmal’s replacement. Akmal was recently recalled to the ODI team for the upcoming Champions Trophy, set to be played in England from June 1 to 18.

The players went through a complete fitness test two days back in Birmingham. Akmal had already been dropped from Pakistani squad for West Indies in April because of his poor fitness.
